The Franschhoek Wine Tram

A hop-on, hop-off tram-and-bus loop through the Franschhoek winelands — the most relaxed, car-free (and designated-driver-free) way to taste your way around the valley.

The short version

  • Five colour-coded lines, each looping eight or nine wine estates; you hop off to taste, hop back on when the next tram comes (about hourly).
  • Around R300 (~$16) buys the transport and the freedom — tastings and lunch you pay for at each farm.
  • The real luxury: nobody has to be the sober driver, and you don’t need a car.

What is it?

The Franschhoek Wine Tram is a hop-on hop-off circuit of the valley’s wine estates, run on a mix of vintage open-sided trams and open-air tram-buses (not every farm sits on the old rail line, so the lines combine both). There are five colour-coded lines, each stopping at eight or nine estates; some depart the central Franschhoek terminal, others from Groot Drakenstein. A full loop takes about an hour, so a tram passes each stop roughly hourly — you pick your line by which farms you most want to hit.

Why go?

Because it solves the one real problem with a winelands day — someone always has to drive — and turns it into the best part. You taste where you like, linger where it’s good, and let the tram do the rest, with the valley’s mountains rolling past between stops. It isn’t the cheapest way to see Franschhoek, but for a relaxed, car-free, no-stress day of good wine it’s hard to beat. Our advice: plan two or three estates rather than trying to “win” all nine, and pick a line with a lunch stop built in.
